The section on sale comprises 14 steps and was part of the original spiral staircase from 1889, that connected the second and topmost third floor. The stairs are made of steel and riveted sheet metal. And were designed under the supervision of Gustave Eiffel and team.
On December 1st, 1983, the staircase was dismantled to make space for new lifts.
4 sets of stairs remained in France. While, twenty sections were sold at an auction directly from the Eiffel Tower company to various private collectors around the world. The sale was organised by Maîtres Ader, Picard and Tajan.
The section on sale today belongs to lot no. 1 from that historic sale. And these 14 stairs have since remained in the same private collection, in France, for over forty years, eventually having been restored by the workshops responsible for the maintenance of the Eiffel Tower, to ensure the preservation of its structure and original features.
And that my friend is how you’ve got a chance to take this iconic piece home!

So, where did the other stairs go?
One of them can be seen in the gardens of the Yoishii Foundation in Yamanashi, Japan, another near the Statue of Liberty in New York, and even at Disneyland. Many others are part of international private collections.

At the 100th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower in 1989, a part of the tower was relocated from France to the Kiyoharu Art Colony. The sculpture of Gustave Eiffel next to the staircase (photo above) was made by the French sculptor, César Baldaccini
